Unlocking the potential of Western Australia's biodiversity
Untapped Potential
As home to several thousand native plant species, Conservation International identifies Western Australia's South West region as one of only 36 biodiversity hotspots around the world. Through an extensive research program, led by our experienced team of chemists and biochemists, we are seeking to unlock the potential of this largely unexplored biodiversity reservoir. With promising early stage results, our ambition is to develop safe, natural and unique treatments to tackle new and existing diseases around the globe.

Global Threat
One area of interest is antimicrobial resistance (AMR) whereby microbes change over time and no longer respond to medicines making infections difficult to treat. This increases the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. Globally, there are approximately 700,000 deaths due to AMR every year and by 2050, this number is expected to grow to 10 million - surpassing the number of deaths caused by cancer.
The continuing increase in global AMR highlights the pressing need to develop new therapeutics with Nature providing a vital source of new chemical entities for scientists around the world.
